Presentation on "A Day in the Life: Exploring the Deep Sea Aboard the E/V Nautilus”

Melissa Baffa serves as the Development Officer in charge of Foundation and Corporate Relations at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and as an instructor with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at California State University, Channel Islands. Previously, she worked for several different Ventura County nonprofit organizations, taught middle school science in Simi Valley and marine biology in the Upward Bound program at California Lutheran University, and worked as a research associate at Amgen.
Since 2015, she has been a Science Communication Fellow with the Ocean Exploration Trust, exploring the deep sea in various California locations and the Galapagos Islands as part of Dr. Robert Ballard’s Corps of Exploration. An avid nature and outdoors enthusiast, Melissa is also active in her community, serving as the President of the Board of Directors of the Ventura County Leadership Academy, on the Advisory Council and Development Committee of the Ventura Land Trust, the Advisory Board of Ventura Wild, and as an advisor to KidSTREAM Children’s Museum. She previously served on the boards of the Ventura County Women’s Economic Roundtable, the Ventura County Women’s Political Council, the California League of Park Associations, and the Oxnard Downtown Management District. Melissa graduated from California Lutheran University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, and lives in Ventura.
The 2020 Women in STEM Speaker Series takes place every third Thursday of the month from 6pm-8pm. Each month from March to September of 2020, the California Oil Museum will feature a female speaker in the field of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
